Boycotting Indiana
I'm not sure how many folks are still around LJ these days, but I encourage anyone who hasn't already read about the travesty happening in Indiana to do their research. Some people are calling for a complete boycott of the state, which makes a lot of sense. However, the SCA 50th year anniversary event is next June, and would be adversely affected. There are a lot of good reasons to boycott, and a lot of good reasons to attend (which I personally support). Give it some thought, and we can discuss it here (if anyone's still listening?).

Same-sex consort wording deadline Dec. 1
If you haven't yet done so, you have until Dec. 1 (THIS SATURDAY!) to send your comments to the Board of Directors about the new proposed wording:

Current language reads:

"Each competitor in a Royal List must be fighting for a consort of the opposite gender."

New Proposed Language:

"Each competitor in a Royal List must be fighting for a prospective consort of the opposite sex unless the Crown has elected to permit a competitor to fight for a prospective consort of the same sex"

Commentary can be sent to comments@sca.org with “Same-Gender Consort Proposal” in the subject line.

(Additionally, another sentence has also been proposed to be added:

"No one may take part in the list as both competitor and also consort."

The BoD is also taking commentary on this addition as well.)

Moderating submissions
In an effort to stem an ever-increasing tide of spambot accounts and spam posts, all new posts will be submitted for moderator approval first. Also, if you come across any spam comments to your posts, please let us know before deleting it so we can ban the user from the community.

Don't worry, we'll get to your submissions as quickly as we can, but I just wanted everyone to know. Thanks!

43 years ago a bunch of queers decided they were tired of being harassed, denigrated and abused and stood up for themselves. 3 days of riots ensued, and the country was suddenly forced to see them as people. We have the queens, dykes, leather men, and drag queens of that night, as well as those brave individuals who worked for decades before them, to thank for laying the groundwork of the progress we've attained today. The fight continues every day, but I for one look back proudly on what they did for me and thank them for it.

2 Pennsic issues
Greetings! Pennsic is less than 3 months away! (Gasp!) :)

First, I'd like to send out yet another call for a Dance Master for the Clan Blue Feather Ball, which is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7. Please contact me if you are interested, or if you know someone who might be interested that I could contact.

Second, I'd like to propose a Clan Meeting on the 2nd Saturday, August 4. Lots of interesting things to discuss and update on, not the least of which is the same-sex monarch proposal from the BoD. We'd be happy to host at the encampment unless someone else would like to volunteer or suggest another space.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year!

Celebrate the Clan's 20th Anniversary!
In December of 1990, the following badge was registered with the SCA College of Arms to Moses von dem Falken for the use of "House Blue Feather:"

"Argent, a feather azure."

In celebration of the past 20 years of Clan Blue Feather, all and sundry are invited to attend the Clan Blue Feather Ball and Fashion Cotillion to be held on Tuesday, August 10, at 9:00 p.m. in the Dance Tent at the Pennsic War in the Kingdom of Aethelmearc.

This year attendees are encouraged to dress in their best, most original, amazing, outrageous and/or elegant blue feather-themed garb to show off their Blue Feather pride.

As usual, there will be dancing, music, revelry, entertainment and refreshments, as well as a Chinese auction. There will also be roving mystery judges, and prizes will be awarded to gentles wearing the most noteworthy garb.

Please feel free to spread the word! More information about the Clan can be found at www.bluefeather.org.

Seattle AIDS walk
I am walking this year in the AIDS walk in memory of my Uncles who I lost to AIDS. Upchuck, the front man for The Fags and Travis "Mona Lott" McCartney who helped me to accept myself how I am and never apologize for being true to that.

It is with a heavy heart that I report the sad news of the passing of Chimbai of the Great Dark Horde.

For those that knew him, he was witty, gregarious and wise. He served the GDH as Khan and Slumlord, and was a long-time member of Clan Blue Feather. He would often be seen riding his festooned cart around Pennsic, both tormenting and amusing passers-by. He was an old, dear friend who I will miss a lot. My heart goes out to his partner, Chon, and all others who called him friend.

For those interested in adding the forums at bluefeather.org to your friends page, I set up a syndication feed:

It looks like it's working, and hopefully it'll help folks stay more in touch with the forums, as we're hoping they'll end up being the focal point for all things CBF.

Hi all,
I'm a uni student working on my queer studies certificate. For my final project I'm attempting to collect queer writings in the first person. These can be fiction or truth. So basically I'm here looking for anyone who wants to write first person queer narratives (of all varieties) and post them to my comm. queernarrative
If this is upsetting feel free to delete. If not, I hope some of you post or prompt friends or interested parties to do so.

Here Goes Nothing
Why would I be nervous? Ha.

sca_diversity is online. I wrote up a DRAFT (i.e. it is _not_ final) copy of my aspirations for the community, what it hopes to accomplish, etc.

You're all welcome to take a look.

The Name Game...
So...I'm thinking about launching a community for further discussion of the whole...thing...I launched on the main sca group.

SCA_Equality. Yes? No?

Trying to come up with something that doesn't sound hyperbolic and/or pretentious is a real challenge. The best one I had previously was SCA_Hope.

Same-sex rulers in history?

doniago has created a... spirited discussion in sca about changing Corpora law so that same-sex monarchs can sit on the throne. Lots of arguments, all pretty typical of the SCA (i.e., change vs. tradition, historical accuracy vs. "creative" anachronism, heteronormativism vs. 21st century politics, and on and on and on).

One of the arguments, as can be expected, is that it's not period. Others, however, say it is. What say ye? Give us some examples of same-sex ruling pairs in history.

Announcing the Clan Blue Feather Known Worlde Forum
Fowarded from several e-mail lists from Genjiro Tenmakutsukuri (aka Gabbo):

Subject: Announcing the Clan Blue Feather Known Worlde Forum
From: palshife2000 gabriel@tradersoftamerlane.com
To: BlueFeatherEncampment@yahoogroups.com
Date:Thu, 4 Dec 2008 11:34 am

As was discussed during the Blue Feather known-world meeting this past Pennsic and the announced on the website shortly after, some new additions to the Blue Feather online presence are in the works. The goal is to make collaborating online easier for our Blue Feather family so that we might better keep in touch when we are not face to face, and offer a place for our new members to join in.

I am happy to announce that an important part of this goal is now complete: the Clan Blue Feather Known World Forums are online

You can access them via the "forum" link on the website: http://www.bluefeather.org. We also offer an RSS feed of the forum.

My goals in implementing this forums are the following:

Bring together our online communities: Much as the new website was redesigned to consolidate the many and varied blue feather "homepages" previously on the web into one central, easy to remember, place (bluefeather.org). The new forum is there to do the same with our discussions; bring together the varying discussions taking place in many smaller, fractured communities. Some of these communities have fallen into disuse, or have a scope so narrow that they are unknown. With one centrally-located, well-organized forum, broad enough to cover all topics of discussion, we have a place where we can all gather online, and get a true sense of the scope and people of our community.

Better organized online discussions: Email lists and free groups such as Yahoo or Google have some inherent problems that can make browsing, searching for, and participating in discussions difficult. The biggest of these is that messages are organized chronologically, with no regard to the topics of each individual message. Our forum uses phpBB a popular forum software that organizes our discussions into easy to follow topics and threads. This way, you can easily browse all the discussions going on, but also follow specific ones and be notified of replies via email. More robust search options also make it easier to see if a discussion is already underway, and join in. Image and file attachments, polls, private messaging, automatic archiving, and member profiles are just some of the many features that hosting our own forum offers. If you have used webforums before, chances are you'll be familiar with ours.

Encourage a living online presence: A newcomer who happens upon a sparsely populated, outdated or rarely used blue-feather discussion board may wrongly assume that the Clan is dead. With one central forum my hope is that we can gather ALL of our members to discuss clan issues as broad as our yearly encampment planning, to historical research, to arts and sciences, to new events and more! (indeed, categories for the above topics have already been established) Not only can these discussions help generate content for the webpage (event announcements, images for our upcoming new galleries, etc.) more importantly it shows prospective members (and the world at large) that we as a Clan are alive and well.

So it is in this spirit that I encourage you all to do two things.

First and foremost, sign up for the forums by clicking the "register" link in the top left and participate! A great place to start is the "Introduce yourself" topic under the "General Discussion" forum.

Secondly, if you know of any existing Blue Feather related message boards, email lists, yahoo, Google groups or the like please encourage their membership to do the same! Post a link to http://bluefeather.org/forum or just forward this email along!

A quick note: Thanks very much to Carson, whose help was integral in the technical implementation of these forums, and to Joshua for helping organize them.

Thanks for listening, and I look forward to meeting many new folks on our forum.

Yours in service,
--Genjiro Tenmakutsukuri
